Scientists are developing a new type of fabric that may mean we won’t have to clean our clothes in the future. Recent experiments show that cotton fabric coated with the right mixture of chemicals can dissolve stains and remove bad smells after a few hours in the sun. The new fabric contains chemicals which trigger chemical reactions in light. It is the same chemical that helps sunscreen block the sun and is used as tattoo ink. The new fabric though is not yet safe enough for people to wear and the new technology needs to be tested to be sure that it won’t harm those who wear it. But the scientist who developed the fabric says that he hopes to wear self-cleaning clothes one day and avoid having to do laundry. (by Prof. Simon Smith)
