Most English songs use rhymes. A rhyme is when two words end with the same sound. We can find rhymes in the Beatles song “Yesterday” which has the following rhyming words: “yesterday,” “away,” “stay,” and “say.” You can find rhymes in “Poker Face,” one of Lady Gaga’s first hits. She rhymes “hot” with “got,” “be” with “me,” and “gun” with “fun.” We can rhyme “one” with “fun,” “two” with “shoe,” and “three” with “tree.” What can we rhyme with “seven”? “Heaven!” Try to find rhymes when you listen to English songs. My students spend each day at a primary school or kindergarten. They watch classes to see the differences between Australian education and education in Japan. I visit the students every day to make sure that everything is fine. We watched assemblies at the primary schools last Monday and Tuesday. First, the principal (the head of the school) talked about important things, and then the children sang the national anthem. Finally, there were special awards to several children in each grade for working hard in class and at sports. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
