2016年8月26日「モバイル英語学習」第381号(英語のエッセイ ): Report from Rio

—————————————-
I live in Rio de Janeiro, the city of the 2016 Olympic Games. Before the Games started, not so many Brazilians seemed interested in them. However, as the Brazilian athletes gave great performances and got more medals than anybody expected, people became excited. The climax was the men’s football match final between Brazil and Germany. Finally, Brazil revenged their defeat to Germany at the World Cup. After Neymar’s winning kick, I could hear the sound of firecrackers and car horns everywhere. I think the Olympic Games ended successfully with this victory. (written by a reader, edited by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

The Olympic Games are over, and the host country is full of joy. Brazil won gold medals in men’s soccer and men’s volleyball in the last two days. Brazil is a soccer-loving country, and this was their first gold medal in that sport. To many Brazilians, the stars of the Olympics were Rafaela Silva, a young woman judoist (or judoka) from a poor family who got Brazil’s first gold medal, and Neymar, captain of the soccer team who kicked in the final goal. Prime Minister Abe appeared as Super Mario in the closing ceremony to invite everyone to Tokyo in 2020. Will you be going there? (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
