2013年7月31日「モバイル英語学習」第192号(エッセイ): Two Great Baseball Players Said Goodbye

********************
Two great baseball players have said goodbye in the last two days. Although Matsui Hideki retired from baseball last December as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays, he signed a one-day contract with the Yankees and retired in a Yankee uniform on Sunday. His greatest moment in the Major Leagues was winning the Most Valuable Player award for the 2009 World Series. Then, on Monday, Yamasaki Takeshi announced that he would retire at the end of this season. He won the home run titles in both the Central and the Pacific Leagues. He started with the Chunichi Dragons, and he will finish with them.(by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

The city of New Delhi hosted the Commonwealth Games in October. This was the first time India had hosted the Games and only the second time the event had been held in Asia. The Commonwealth Games consists of 54 countries including (in alphabetical order) Australia; The Bahamas; Bangladesh; Barbados; Botswana; Malaysia; Maldives; New Zealand; Nigeria; Pakistan; United Kingdom; United Republic of Tanzania and Zambia. The Games are held, like the Olympics, every 4 years, and the last one took place in Melbourne. This year however the Games opened with a lot of controversy. Mainly, that they were not prepared – two days before the track events started they were still doing construction! Maybe it is a lesson for all of us: never leave things to the last minute!! (by Prof. Simon Smith)
