Osaka Naomi, the daughter of a Japanese mother and a Haitian father, won the U.S. Open on Saturday in New York City. It was a big victory for the 20-year-old. She is the first Japanese athlete to win a tennis Grand Slam title, and she was playing her idol, Serena Williams, in the final. Williams is one of the greatest players in the history of tennis. She has more singles titles than anyone else except Margaret Court. However, Williams had to take time off last year when she had a baby. Williams played hard as usual, but she couldn’t keep up with Osaka, who is 16 years younger than her.

The 18th Asian Games have come to an end. China, Japan and Korea were the three big winners, but Indonesia, the host country, came in fourth with a total of 98 medals. Japan got two gold medals on the last day, one for the mixed relay triathlon and the other for men’s hockey. That brought their total to 75 golds. There were many great performances, but Ikee Rikako’s was the best. She was chosen as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for her six gold medals and two silver medals in swimming. She is the first female athlete to receive the MVP award in the Asian Games.(by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
