2018年6月20日「モバイル英語学習」第555号(英語のエッセイ): Japan Wins Game 1 in the World Cup

When I got home last night, I turned on the TV and was happy to see Japan in the lead. Kagawa had scored the first goal of the game on a penalty kick, so the score was 1-0. Then, with 6 minutes left in the first half, Colombia scored on a free kick. Quintero kicked the ball low, and it went under the wall of players when they jumped. Kawashima, the Japanese goalie, caught the ball, but it was already inside the goal. In the second half, Japan got a goal with Osako’s header from Honda’s corner kick. That put Japan ahead again, and they won 2-1. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

A 14-year-old is in the news. Harimoto Tomokazu has become the youngest player to win the Men’s Singles at the All Japan Table Tennis Championships. He beat 28-year-old Mizutani Jun, a 9-time champion and the winner of the bronze medal at the last Olympics. He also won the ITTF World Tour Men’s Singles title in the Czech Republic last August. That made him the youngest winner of a World Tour. Actually, Harimoto comes from a table tennis family. His father is a table tennis coach, and his mother played for China in the 1995 World Team Championships. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
