My wife tells me that the pear season is coming to an end. That makes me feel sad because I love Asian pears. I like the pears that are grown in the U.S. and Europe, too, but I prefer Asian pears because they are crisp as well as juicy! However, I have been doing a lot of traveling around Aichi Prefecture recently. I have to go to kindergartens, day care centers and elementary schools to watch my students teach. Everywhere I go, I see orange persimmons on trees. It may be the end of the pear season, but I am happy that we are still in the middle of the persimmon season. (by Prof. Doulgas Jarrell)

I went for a morning walk in a wooded park yesterday morning. I like to go birdwatching, and I was hoping to find birds that I could not see in Japan. The first birds I heard were woodpeckers. They live in Japan, too. I heard one using its beak to make a hole in a tree. This is the way it finds insects to eat. Then I saw true American birds: wild turkeys! There were two hens with about 15-20 chicks (babies) in a field. There was also a mother deer with a fawn (a baby deer) there. What a great day! (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
