Britain has started to make its money out of plastic. Last month, it came out with a plastic 5 pound note. Most countries still use paper money, so why is Britain changing? Australia was the first country to change to plastic. They did it because they were having problems with people making counterfeit paper money. Plastic bills are almost impossible to copy. Another reason is that plastic lasts longer. You can wash your money by mistake and it will be fine. I wonder if other countries are going to change and start using this new technology. A famous travel magazine picked JR Kanazawa as one of the world’s most beautiful train stations. It has a wooden gate shaped like Japanese drums and a glass and steel dome. Like many other stations, however, it had a problem with pigeons. The gray birds left white droppings everywhere. Now a falconer comes twice a week with a hawk. It flies around and scares away the pigeons. International visitors enjoy taking pictures of the hawk, and they stop to ask the falconer what he is doing. I’m sure his English is getting better! (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
