When you think of dangerous wild animals, what do you think of? In the western U.S., there are bears and pumas (large wild cats). In the eastern U.S., there is a bird that can be a problem: the wild turkey. These birds are much bigger than chickens, and they live in the countryside. Recently, a mail carrier for the post office in New Jersey was attacked by turkeys as he was getting out of his truck. He called his boss, and the boss called the police saying, “You’re not going to believe this, but…” The police sent some officers to the truck, and they rescued the mail carrier.  (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

Early in November last year, I visited Tsumago in Nagano Prefecture. During the Edo period, it was a post town on a highway going from Edo to Kyoto. Historic buildings have been preserved, and there are no convenience stores, light poles, or traffic signals. All the shops close at 5 o’clock. During the dark night, the streets are only illuminated with paper-covered lamps, so the stars twinkle clearly in the sky. I felt as if I had been transported through time to the Edo period. It was like a mystery world. (written by a reader, edited by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
