Notes

We can see many people wearing yukatas at summer festivals, mainly when they go to see the fireworks. In the old days, people wore their yukatas every day in summer. People wore them until the yukatas wore out. Then, people made dusters and diapers out of them. When I was young, my mother made several yukatas for me. But by that time, people didn’t wear them so often. My yukatas were sleeping in my chest of drawers for a long time, so this summer I decided to make summer blouses out of them. I made two blouses. These blouses are more comfortable and cooler than regular clothes. (by a reader)

2019年8月1日「モバイル英語学習」第615号(英語のエッセイ): More Ways to Beat the Heat

Notes:
scary 恐ろしい、おっかない;
thriller スリラー;
miserable 悲惨な、不幸な;
protein たんぱく質;

———————–
Here are more ideas from readers on how to beat the heat.
1) Listen to a scary story or watch a thriller film.
2) Don’t say, “It’s hot today, isn’t it?” many times. That just makes you feel more miserable.
3) Eat pork. You can get protein easily from it, and we often don’t get enough in summer.
4) Eat watermelon. It has a lot of water, minerals, and vitamins.
5) Wrap a wet towel around your neck.
6) Take a shower after eating spicy food.
7) Stay in an air-conditioned room at home, or stay at a shopping mall or library all day.
8) Go to a country in the southern hemisphere.
