2020年5月29日「モバイル英語学習」第656 号 (英語のエッセイ): Bill Gates Warned Us

Notes
epidemic 伝染病の大流行;

—————————-
In 2015, Bill Gates gave a TED talk just after the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. He was talking about the danger of new diseases. He said that viruses are probably more dangerous than war. We have special forces to fight wars, but we are not prepared for an epidemic. The world needs a large group of doctors and other medical professionals to stop epidemics. If a new virus spreads through the air like influenza, it can kill millions of people. Now we have Covid-19 which has spread all over the world and killed more than 280,000 people. He was right. We weren’t ready. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

2019年11月6日「モバイル英語学習」第639(英語のクイズ): A Speech by a Great Man

——————————
I heard a speech by a great man on Sunday at a language teaching conference. Oussouby Sacko comes from a French-speaking country, Mali, in West Africa, but he grew up speaking an African language at home. He studied architecture in China and then in Japan. He had many great stories to tell about his experiences and problems in different cultures. In 2002, he became a Japanese citizen, and now he is the president of Kyoto Seika University. He wants all students, Japanese and foreign, to have equal chances, and he wants everyone to learn to understand and accept each other’s differences. (by Prof.Douglas Jarrell)
