In 1935, a man was riding his motorcycle when he saw two boys in the road. He tried not to hit them, but he fell off his motorcycle and died from the accident on May 19. His name was T. E. Lawrence. When he was in his twenties, Lawrence went to the Middle East to study. World War I started, and he helped the Arabs fight against the Ottoman Empire. In 1962, they made a movie about his life. The title is “Lawrence of Arabia.” It is almost four hours long, but many people think that it is one of the best movies ever made. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

On April 15, 1755, a great book was published in London. It wasn’t a novel or a biography. It was a dictionary of the English language. These days, a dictionary is written by a group of people called editors, but Samuel Johnson basically wrote this dictionary by himself. He worked for more than 8 years and included over 42,000 words. He wrote a definition of each word, but then he found sentences of great English writers such as Shakespeare, Milton, and Dryden to show how the words were used. For 150 years, Johnson’s dictionary was the number one dictionary of English. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
