People may not like very hot weather, but neither do mosquitoes. Osaka Prefecture wanted to find out more about these insects, so they set traps in about 15 different places. They counted the mosquitoes for 10 years. In 2004, the number of mosquitoes caught in each trap was over 30. By 2013, the number had gone down to about 20. Why did that happen? Maybe it was because the summers are getting hotter. Very hot weather dries up the wet places that mosquitoes need to lay eggs. The high temperatures may also kill the mosquitoes. Do you think there are fewer mosquitoes this year? (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

The weather was great last Sunday, and I went for a walk beside the Shonai River with some other birdwatchers. I had done this walk several times before, but I had never seen a striated heron. They were surprised because this is a good place to see this bird. They said that birdwatchers come all the way from Osaka just to take pictures of striated herons at the Fujimae Tidal Flats. Well, speak of the devil! There was a striated heron on some rocks in the river. I got within 20 meters of it and took more than 50 pictures! (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
