New England, the northeastern part of the U.S., is a great place to go birdwatching. There are mountains, forests, rivers and lakes, and a long seashore. On Monday I went to see a puffin, sometimes referred to as the penguin of the north. It is a small black and white sea bird like the penguin, but it has a big orange beak like a parrot. Unlike penguins, puffins float on the sea and dive for fish using their wings for propulsion. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

2013年7月17日「モバイル英語学習]第188号(エッセイ): Travel by bicycle in New York City

*******************
If you go to New York City now, you can go around the city on a bicycle. There is a new program called Citi Bike. You can find bicycle stations in many different places. Use your credit card and buy a membership for a day, a week, or a year. Borrow a bicycle at one station, and then leave it at another station. Bike-sharing started with free bicycles in Amsterdam in the 1960s, but now most cities charge fees. It’s a great way to travel when the weather is good.(by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
