Yesterday, an elementary student found a dead dragonfly by the door of the visitor center where I work. I was surprised because it was about 10 centimeters long. That’s the biggest dragonfly I have ever seen! Someone at the center told me the name in Japanese:”oniyanma.” In English, it is called “golden-ringed dragonfly.” The English name comes from the gold rings that go around the dragonfly’s body, but hardly anyone in English-speaking countries knows this dragonfly. That’s because it only lives in East Asia. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

Is it the end of the rainy season? The weather reporters on TV don’t seem to be sure, but the cicadas know that the rainy season is coming to an end. They have come out of the ground and are in the trees everywhere in Nagoya. On Sunday, I stopped by someone’s house to pick her up in my car. Her apartment is across the street from a park, and when she opened the car door, the noise was incredible. It bothers some people, but I like to walk among the trees. A park is the only place in Nagoya where natural noise is louder than the man-made noise of cars and trucks. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
