Most people like to stay inside when it is very cold, but there is one city where people celebrate winter by eating outside. Kitami City in northern Hokkaido has many indoor grilled meat restaurants, but it also holds a Japanese-style barbecue festival outside at the beginning of February. The temperature can go below minus 20 degrees, but there are about 2,000 people who come to eat outside in the evening. They sit around smoky “shichirin” (small barbecues) and grill the fresh meat, using salt and pepper or special sauces to season it. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

2020年2月7日「モバイル英語学習」第646(英語のエッセイ): It’s Finally Over

Notes:
heat stroke 熱射病、日射病;
be relieved ほっとした;

The rainy season is finally over in Japan. Okinawa came out of the rainy season first. Actually, that part of Japan had a shorter-than-usual rainy season. It only lasted a month, ending on June 12. The rest of Japan had a longer-than-usual rainy season. It started in the middle of June and has just ended. I think many people are relieved. They are sick of rain almost every day. Besides, the rain caused bad floods throughout Japan. The summer sun should help dry up the places that have been badly hit. Just be careful not to stay outside too long under the sun. You may get heat stroke. (by Prof.Douglas Jarrell)
