Typhoons always make life difficult for people, but the problems are even bigger when they hit during a long holiday like “obon.” Typhoon #10, known as Typhoon Krosa in English, looks like it will make landfall in Shikoku soon. Many people have gone back to their hometowns all around the country, and now they are trying to get back home. Some trains are not running, and airlines are cancelling flights. When and how is everyone going to get home? Actually, my daughter and her family are planning to fly back from Hokkaido today. I hope they make it! (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

2019年8月11日「モバイル英語学習」第618号(英語のエッセイ): Yukatas

We can see many people wearing yukatas at summer festivals, mainly when they go to see the fireworks. In the old days, people wore their yukatas every day in summer. People wore them until the yukatas wore out. Then, people made dusters and diapers out of them. When I was young, my mother made several yukatas for me. But by that time, people didn’t wear them so often. My yukatas were sleeping in my chest of drawers for a long time, so this summer I decided to make summer blouses out of them. I made two blouses. These blouses are more comfortable and cooler than regular clothes. (by a reader)
