Next year is the year of the sheep. According to East Asian ideas, people who are born in this year are polite, clever and cautious. They look after their parents and enjoy a quiet lifestyle. Of course, they have their weak points. They tend to worry and cannot make decisions. In English-speaking cultures, we don’t have a good image of sheep. We see them as animals that cannot think or lead. All they can do is follow. Of course, we like their wool and their meat, but no one wants to be called a sheep. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

2014年2月11日「モバイル英語学習」第227号(エッセイ ): My Parents in New Zealand

***********************
I have my parents in Japan, but I also have parents in New Zealand.  When I went to New Zealand on the Shimane University program two years ago, I met them. They were my host parents. When I met them for the first time, the mother gave me a big hug. I felt I was really welcome. They repeatedly said to me “Take your time” when I talked with them in English during my stay. Though I was not good at speaking English, I didn’t hesitate to speak to them thanks to such words and their attitude toward me. I really love them and respect them. And I’m glad to say that I’m going to their place again this February. I’m really looking forward to seeing them and want to talk about many things with them. (written by student Miss Kobayashi, edited by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
