2019年4月10日「モバイル英語学習」第600号(英語のエッセイ): Have You Seen a 2,000 Bill Recently?

Notes
bill 紙幣
——————–
The government says that there will be new faces on the 10,000 yen bill, the 5,000 yen bill, and the 1,000 yen bill in 2024. When I first came to Japan, I remember seeing Shotokutaishi and Ito Hirofumi. Then came Fukuzawa Yukichi, Nitobe Inazo, and Natsume Soseki. There are two more new faces now. American money is different. George Washington has been on the $1 bill since I was born. So have Lincoln ($5), Hamilton ($10), and Jackson ($20). There is one similarity between Japanese money and American money, however. Americans seldom use the $2 bill, and I hardly ever see a 2,000 yen bill. (by Porf. Douglas Jarrell)

2018年11月28日「モバイル英語学習」第579号(英語のエッセイ): The Most Popular Names

Notes
era 時代
—————————-
What are the most popular names of the Heisei era? The Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Company has just announced that the most popular name for boys is Shota. For girls, it’s Misaki. Do you know anyone with one of these first names? I don’t have any students named Shota because there are no boys at my university. I do know at least one student named Misaki. Meiji Yasuda also announced the most popular names for babies in 2018. The most popular girl’s name is Yuzuki. For boys, it’s Ren. This time, I know a boy named Ren, but I don’t know any girls named Yuzuki. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
