2019年2月20日「モバイル英語学習」第592号(英語のエッセイ): Supermoon

—————————
Go outside tonight and look at the moon. It will look bigger and brighter than usual. Actually, we missed the biggest supermoon of 2019 by a day. It was last night, but we couldn’t see it in Nagoya because of the rain. What is a supermoon? It is when the moon is full and closest to the Earth. Supermoons can be up to 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than normal moons. There are three supermoons this year. One was last month, one is happening right now, and the next one will be in March. If you miss this one, try again on March 21. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

2019年2月5日「モバイル英語学習」第590号(英語のエッセイ): So Cold that They Are Closing the Zoo

———————–
According to the news, the temperature in parts of Hokkaido will go down to minus 16 degrees centigrade today. The sea ice has come in from the Okhotsk Sea along the north side of the island. It is very cold, but it isn’t as cold as it is in some parts of the U.S. Temperatures around the Great Lakes have dropped to minus 30 degrees. When the wind blows, it can feel like minus 45 degrees. The government is telling people not to stay outside for a long time. It is so cold that the zoo in Chicago will be closed for a couple of days.
