On April 15, 1755, a great book was published in London. It wasn’t a novel or a biography. It was a dictionary of the English language. These days, a dictionary is written by a group of people called editors, but Samuel Johnson basically wrote this dictionary by himself. He worked for more than 8 years and included over 42,000 words. He wrote a definition of each word, but then he found sentences of great English writers such as Shakespeare, Milton, and Dryden to show how the words were used. For 150 years, Johnson’s dictionary was the number one dictionary of English. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

One company has been doing a survey of Japanese children for more than 30 years. They ask children from the third grade of elementary school through high school what they want to be. In past years, many young boys wanted to be professional athletes or YouTubers, and young girls wanted to be bakers or singers. This year, the answers are different. For the first time, most boys and girls say that they just want a company job. Where have their dreams gone? I’m not sure, but I think the pandemic has changed the way they think.
