2020年7月20日「モバイル英語学習」第663号 (英語のエッセイ): Natural Noise

Notes

Is it the end of the rainy season? The weather reporters on TV don’t seem to be sure, but the cicadas know that the rainy season is coming to an end. They have come out of the ground and are in the trees everywhere in Nagoya. On Sunday, I stopped by someone’s house to pick her up in my car. Her apartment is across the street from a park, and when she opened the car door, the noise was incredible. It bothers some people, but I like to walk among the trees. A park is the only place in Nagoya where natural noise is louder than the man-made noise of cars and trucks. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

2020年7月13日「モバイル英語学習」第662号 (英語のエッセイ): Too Many Natural Disasters!

Notes
torrential rains 豪雨;
mudslide 地滑り;

————————–
I was happy that we had rain in June because rainy seasons recently have been very dry. Without the rain, dams don’t fill up and farmers don’t have enough water to grow crops. There isn’t enough water for people in the cities, either. Since the beginning of July, however, there has been too much rain, especially in Kyushu. Rivers have risen, and towns and villages have been flooded. The hills are so wet that mudslides destroy houses. Almost 60 people have been killed. From typhoons, earthquakes and torrential rains to COVID-19, Japan has too many natural disasters! (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
