The 26th International Johannes Brahms Competition was held from Sept 1-8. This year was a very good year for Japanese pianists. Three Japanese women took the top three prizes in the piano competition. Mihara Miwako from Kanagawa Prefecture was the winner of the competition. She said that she played a piece of music that she had always wanted to play. Ojima Shiho from Tokyo came in second, and Ishii Fuko, also from Kanazawa Prefecture, came in third. Japan has a history of producing great pianists, but it is very unusual that all the prizes go to pianists from the same country. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
