One of the biggest stories in English newspapers recently has been about growing meat. Scientists believe that it could be possible to grow meat in a laboratory by 2020. One of the reasons for the interest in growing meat is that it is expected that meat consumption will double by 2050. This also means that the price will increase so that meat may become a luxury. Also animals need lots of water, which means less water for humans. Added to this, in the future water might be in short supply. Whether you like it or not, laboratory meat may be the only option for us. (by Prof. Simon Smith)
