Popcorn was first eaten in South America thousands of years ago, but it became a popular snack when the popcorn machine was invented in the U.S. in 1885. You can buy ready-made popcorn, but it isn’t as good as freshly-made popcorn. What is the secret to making great popcorn? First, cover the bottom of a pot with cooking oil and heat it until it is very hot. Add uncooked popcorn kernels, cover the pot with a lid, and wait. When they start popping, lower the temperature and shake the pot until the popcorn stops popping. Add salt and melted butter, and you have great popcorn. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
