Akasaki Isamu, Amano Hiroshi, and Nakamura Shuji received their Nobel Prizes in Stockholm this week, and each gave a speech. Akasaki began with a little joke. He said that although the first character in his name meant “red,” he would be talking about blue light. He talked about the importance of choosing the right materials. Amano talked about how he saw his goal from the beginning of his research. Nakamura spoke about how LEDs have helped to save energy. Thanks to their work, the world is a different place now. At this time of year, we can see their LEDs everywhere as Christmas lights.(by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

My sister sent me an email with two photos attached. They were photos of my daughter’s house and my apartment building. My sister has been to the house, but she hasn’t seen our apartment. She got the pictures from Google. The Internet is amazing, but sometimes it can be scary. I’m not sure that I want people to see where I live. I started thinking that I want to live somewhere where Google has never been. Is there any place like that? Actually, they cannot take pictures in North Korea. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
