Japanese scientists have been given the right to name a new element. It is number 113 on the periodic table. This element doesn’t occur in nature. It is a man-made element, and it is very difficult to make. It is also very difficult to see. Japanese scientists have only been able to make it a few times. Scientists in the U.S.A. and Russia have also tried to make it, but the Japanese scientists were more successful. What are they going to name it? The newspaper said that it might be called “Japonium.” (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

Voice recognition software is amazing. I can talk to my cell phone and it types exactly what I say as long as I speak slowly. I have an American accent, but I wonder if it can understand people with accents from other countries. There is a funny video that shows how accents can be a problem. Two men from Scotland with strong Scottish accents get on an elevator with voice recognition software. They need to say the floor number, but the elevator doesn’t understand them when they say 11. You can find the video by searching for “eleven” on YouTube. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
