A farmer owned a horse, but one day the horse ran away. His neighbors said, “What bad luck you have!” But the farmer replied, “Good luck, bad luck, who knows?” The next day, the horse returned with several wild horses and the neighbors said, “What good luck you have!” The farmer replied again, “Good luck, bad luck, who knows?” The next day, the farmer’s son was trying to tame one of the wild horses and broke his leg. The neighbors said, “What bad luck you have!” The farmer replied yet again, “Good luck, bad luck, who knows?” Later, the army came through the village conscripting all able-bodied men for war, but the farmer’s son was not taken because of his broken leg.
