A new project called SeaCURE has started on the south coast of England. Its goal is to help fight climate change by removing carbon dioxide (CO2) from seawater.
The ocean naturally absorbs a lot of CO2 from the air—about one quarter of all CO2 made by human activity. If we take CO2 out of the seawater, the ocean can absorb even more CO2 from the air. This helps lower the total amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. As many people know, too much CO2 in the air is one of the main causes of global warming.
Scientists use a special machine to treat the seawater. This helps the CO2 come out of the water. The gas is then collected and stored. After the process, the seawater goes back into the ocean, ready to absorb more CO2 again.
SeaCURE is still small and removes only a little CO2 now, but scientists think it could grow. The UK government has given £3 million to support it. Researchers are also studying how the process affects sea life. So far, it seems safe, but more research is needed. If successful, this project could be a useful way to reduce global warming.
