My wife and I went shopping after dinner on Saturday night. The parking lot at the large shopping mall was rather empty when we arrived at 8 p.m. When we got to the supermarket section, however, it was full of people. First, we went to buy vegetables, but there wasn’t much left. She chose some zucchini and celery, and we walked on to the fish and meat display. There was hardly anything on the shelves. My wife was very surprised and said, “I’ve never seen the shelves so empty!” Everyone was getting ready for Typhoon Trami (Typhoon 24). The shoppers I saw had baskets full of instant noodles! A great American singer died last week. Aretha Franklin passed away at the age of 76. I remember hearing my first Aretha Franklin song in the 1960s when I was a high school student. That was a great time for American music because black musicians like Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder were bringing new sounds into pop. Aretha started as a gospel singer in her father’s church, but she decided to become a professional singer. During her career, she won 18 Grammy Awards and had many hits, but I still think her best song is “Respect,” the song I first remember hearing. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
