Tokyo had an election for governor yesterday, and for the first time a woman will be the governor of Japan’s largest city. There were 21 candidates. I think this election was more exciting than the last one because more people voted. The top three candidates got about 90% of the vote, but no candidate got over 50%. Even so, Koike Yuriko was the clear winner. She didn’t have the support of any major party, but she got almost 3,000,000 votes. Masuda Hiroya, who came in second, got fewer than 1,800,000 votes. On December 1, Mark Zuckerberg, the head of Facebook, put the following message on his own Facebook: “Priscilla and I are so happy to welcome our daughter Max into this world!” With the birth of their first child, he and his wife have decided to change the world. He wrote, “We will give 99% of our Facebook shares — currently about $45 billion — during our lives to join many others in improving this world for the next generation.” I’m glad that people with so much money want to help other people, and I hope that the Zuckerbergs can change the world for the better.
