Notes
be offended 傷つけられる;
thoughtfulness 思いやりの心

A university student was on a crowded subway train. Then a man in his late 60s or early 70s got on the train and stood near him. The young man stood up and offered the seat to him, but the old man got very angry. The young man was shocked, and since then he is afraid to give up his seat for the elderly. What a sad story! I think the old man thought he was still young, so he was offended. But I think he should have accepted the young man’s kindness and said “I’m fine” with a smile on his face. He should have thanked the young man for his thoughtfulness. (by Douglas Jarrell)

My wife and I went shopping after dinner on Saturday night. The parking lot at the large shopping mall was rather empty when we arrived at 8 p.m. When we got to the supermarket section, however, it was full of people. First, we went to buy vegetables, but there wasn’t much left. She chose some zucchini and celery, and we walked on to the fish and meat display. There was hardly anything on the shelves. My wife was very surprised and said, “I’ve never seen the shelves so empty!” Everyone was getting ready for Typhoon Trami (Typhoon 24). The shoppers I saw had baskets full of instant noodles!
