Have you ever heard of Kadono Eiko? She will get the Hans Christian Andersen Award this year. People call this the Nobel Prize for children’s books. She has written many children’s books, but most people know her because of “Kiki’s Delivery Service.” It is Kadono’s best known book. It’s about a girl who is a half-witch. She can ride a broom and has a black cat named Jiji. After she leaves home, she makes a living delivering things on her broom. Kadono has written at least five more books about Kiki. Actually, I have never read any of the books, but I have seen the movie by Miyazaki Hayao. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

2018年3月20日「モバイル英語学習」第446号(英語のエッセイ): Sightseeing at Home

——————————–
You seldom go to the sightseeing places in your hometown. It’s only when someone comes to visit you from out of town that you go to see these places. My younger daughter, who lives in the U.S., came back last week for a visit. On Sunday, we went to Nagoya Castle. I hadn’t been there in years. A lot has changed. The city has rebuilt the Honmaru Palace that was destroyed in World War II. It is a beautiful, wooden palace full of golden painted screens. Outside, people dressed up as ninja and samurai guided tourists and posed for photos. I felt like I was in Kyoto, not Nagoya. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
