2017年9月14日「モバイル英語学習」第418号(英語のエッセイ): AI Is Better Than Me

———————–
Apple came out with its first iPhone 10 years ago, and it changed the world of cell phones. This year, Apple has three new phones: the iPhone 8, the iPhone 8 plus, and the iPhone X (ten). The iPhone X is the most advanced and the most expensive of the three. One amazing thing about this phone is that it knows who the owner is by their face. It will unlock when you look at the screen. Apple says that it can recognize a person, no matter what the hairstyle. If that is true, then AI is better than me. I cannot recognize some of my own students after they change their hairstyles! I went for a morning walk in a wooded park yesterday morning. I like to go birdwatching, and I was hoping to find birds that I could not see in Japan. The first birds I heard were woodpeckers. They live in Japan, too. I heard one using its beak to make a hole in a tree. This is the way it finds insects to eat. Then I saw true American birds: wild turkeys! There were two hens with about 15-20 chicks (babies) in a field. There was also a mother deer with a fawn (a baby deer) there. What a great day! (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
