Albert Einstein learned that he had won the Nobel Prize when he was in Tokyo to give lectures in 1922. He wanted to give a bellboy at his hotel a tip, but he didn’t have any money. Instead, he wrote a note and gave it to man. The note said that a calm life made people happier than always trying hard to succeed. He told the bellboy that the note would probably be worth more than a tip because he was famous. Now, almost 100 years later, Einstein was right. The note sold at an auction for $1.56 million dollars (almost 178 million yen)!　(by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

The first Speed Skating World Cup of the season was held in the Netherlands over the weekend. The Netherlands has a long history of skating, but this time, Asian countries were the winners. The Japanese women’s team set a new world record in the team pursuit. Takagi Miho, Sato Ayana and Takagi Nana broke the record held by Canada for 8 years. Japanese women also took the gold in the 500 meters (Kodaira Nao), the 1,500 meters (Takagi Miho), and the mass start (Sato Ayano). In the men’s division, Korea won 2 gold medals (Lee Seun-hoon).
