When you think of Japanese souvenirs, what comes to mind? I think of folding fans (“sensu”) and kimonos, so I was surprised to hear about a new trend. More and more foreign visitors are buying school bags as souvenirs. In Japan, “randoseru” are for children, but adults from other countries are buying them not only for children but for themselves. One American actress was photographed with a typical red one on her back. Why are they popular? First of all, they are well made. They have to last for six years on a child’s back. They also come in many different colors these days. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

Recently twin pandas were born at Adventure World in Wakayama Prefecture. I wanted to see the baby pandas so my husband and I went there in April. Before the trip I put together a perfect itinerary. We drove around Shirahama and saw many scenic spots the first day because we could get discount tickets at the hotel for the next day. When I asked for the tickets, the desk clerk said, “I’m so sorry. Adventure World is closed tomorrow.” The park was only closed one day in April, and that was the day we were planning to go! I thought I had checked everything.(written by a reader, edited by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
