Notes
torrential rains 豪雨;
mudslide 地滑り;

————————–
I was happy that we had rain in June because rainy seasons recently have been very dry. Without the rain, dams don’t fill up and farmers don’t have enough water to grow crops. There isn’t enough water for people in the cities, either. Since the beginning of July, however, there has been too much rain, especially in Kyushu. Rivers have risen, and towns and villages have been flooded. The hills are so wet that mudslides destroy houses. Almost 60 people have been killed. From typhoons, earthquakes and torrential rains to COVID-19, Japan has too many natural disasters! (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

geniuses 天才;
struggle もがく、あがく、努力する;

Is intelligence something that is measured by success in school? Not always. In 1895, Albert Einstein wrote an exam to get into university. He failed all the non-science parts of the test. Yet Einstein went on to become one of the world’s best-known geniuses. Winston Churchill struggled in school and failed sixth grade. He went on to win a Nobel Prize and be elected prime minister of the United Kingdom twice. Whoopi Goldberg struggled to read and write and eventually dropped out of high school. She went on to win every major award for excellence in show business: the Oscar, Emmy, Tony, and Grammy. (by Shantel Ivits)
