The Ohsho chain was featured on TV the other night. According to the show, business was slow a few years ago. Then business picked up, and it is even better than before. How did this happen? The company decided to do two things. First, it created a place called “chori dojo” where shop managers from all over Japan come and learn how to cook better. Secondly, it started a new type of Ohsho called “Gyoza Oshsho” which has a different atmosphere and tries to attract female customers. I just checked their website and found a Gyoza Ohsho at a shopping mall near Nagoya. (by a reader)

2019年4月10日「モバイル英語学習」第600号(英語のエッセイ): Have You Seen a 2,000 Bill Recently?

Notes

——————–
The government says that there will be new faces on the 10,000 yen bill, the 5,000 yen bill, and the 1,000 yen bill in 2024. When I first came to Japan, I remember seeing Shotokutaishi and Ito Hirofumi. Then came Fukuzawa Yukichi, Nitobe Inazo, and Natsume Soseki. There are two more new faces now. American money is different. George Washington has been on the $1 bill since I was born. So have Lincoln ($5), Hamilton ($10), and Jackson ($20). There is one similarity between Japanese money and American money, however. Americans seldom use the $2 bill, and I hardly ever see a 2,000 yen bill. (by Porf. Douglas Jarrell)
