Winter has finally arrived. After a long autumn with many warm days, the weather has suddenly turned cold. In fact, it is colder than usual. On Sunday, most parts of Japan had temperatures that didn’t go over 9 degrees, and the low temperature in Nagoya was 3 degrees. I had to travel 45 minutes by motor scooter, and I bundled up. I wore six layers of clothes including a down vest and a winter coat. Even with so many clothes, I started to feel cold inside by the end of the trip. Luckily I wasn’t riding my motor scooter in Sapporo. It was minus 4, and there was snow on the ground! (by Douglas Jarrell)

There is a video on YouTube called “18 Weird Things That Only Exist in Japan.” These things seem very strange to Americans. I’ll tell you about three of them. If you are interested, you can go to YouTube and see the rest.
(1) You can turn around the seats on trains when you want to sit in a group of four. I’ve never seen seats like that on trains in any other country.
(2) Water comes out of the top of the toilet. You can wash your hands with it, and it’s a good way to save water.
(3) One fast-food chain has special napkins for women who want to cover their faces when they eat hamburgers. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
