The 1970 Osaka Expo was the first world fair in Japan, and it was one of Japan’s most successful events ever. There were over 64 million visitors in six months. Last Friday, the BIE (the Bureau International des Expositions), chose Osaka again. It will hold a world fair in 2025. Japan’s second-largest city was chosen over Yekaterinburg, the fourth-largest city of Russia, and Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. Expo 2025 will be held on Yumeshima, a man-made island, in Osaka Bay. The theme will be “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.” Will you be going? (by Douglas Jarrell)

2018年11月20日「モバイル英語学習」第576号(英語のエッセイ): A New Kilogram?

—————————-
Is there a new kilogram? Yes and no. A kilogram is still 1,000 grams, but how do you know if a kilogram in your country weighs as much as a kilogram in another country? In the late 1800s, a group of countries agreed to use a standard weight. They made a perfect kilogram and called it “Le Grand K.” They kept it in Paris. It became the standard, and other countries made copies from it. There was a problem, however. Somehow, the weight of Le Grand K changed. Now scientists have found a new way to measure a kilogram. They don’t need Le Grand K any more. There is a new kilogram. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
