When gold was found in California in 1949, people all over the U.S. left their homes, their jobs, and even their families, and they went to California to look for gold. Everyone wanted to get rich. Actually, the people who got rich were usually the storekeepers. One of those storekeepers was Levi Strauss. Together with Jacob Davis, he made the first jeans. They designed working pants with metal studs at the pockets and patented them on May 20, 1873. Those were the first blue jeans. They had Strauss’s first name on them: Levi’s. A 33-year-old British man weighed about 133 kilograms. He wanted to lose weight, so he decided to join a kick-boxing camp in Thailand. He practiced four hours every day for a year, and by the end of the year he had lost more than 50 kilograms! He was really looking forward to going back to Britain. He wanted to show his family how much better he looked. He got to the airport, but his passport photo looked so different that the Thai officials stopped him. He had to show the officials information about the kick-boxing camp. Then they let him leave. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
