Yoshino Akira has won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry together with John B. Goodenough and M. Stanley Whittingham. The three scientists were given the prize for their research on the lithium battery. This battery has changed the world. Older batteries were weaker, and they were much bigger. Lithium batteries are strong and much smaller, and they can be recharged many times. They power many things such as mobile phones, computers, and electric cars. Thanks to discoveries by Whittingham and Goodenough, Yoshino was able to create the first workable lithium battery. 2019年10月11日「モバイル英語学習」第634(英語のエッセイ): A Country with Many Natural Disasters

——————————-
Another big typhoon (No.19) is approaching Japan. I don’t remember how many typhoons have hit Japan so far this year because there have been too many. But I remember that the last one (No.15) was powerful enough to leave hundreds of thousands of homes without electricity for a long time, especially in Chiba Prefecture. There are still some homes without electricity in Chiba even now, and many homes are waiting to be repaired. Japan is a country with many natural disasters, isn’t it? I hope that typhoon No.19 will go away soon! (by a reader)
