This weekend, it didn’t matter which sport you liked. There was something for everyone. The Rugby World Cup had 5 matches, and on Saturday Japan got its third win by beating Samoa 38-19. Japanese baseball fans could watch the beginning of the Climax Series between the number 2 and number 3 teams of each league. Golf fans had their choice of a ladies’ tournament or a men’s tournament, both in central Japan. In tennis, Osaka Naomi won the China Open. In the World Athletics Championship, the Japanese men’s team got the bronze medal for the 4×100 meter relay. And I haven’t mentioned soccer! (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

Notes
Tonga 南太平洋,Fiji の東の島群から成る王国

————————-
The Rugby World Cup was held at Sapporo Dome on Sep. 21 and 22. Australia played Fiji, and England played Tonga. A couple of festivals were going on in Odori Park, too. I saw many tourists from overseas in the city. One night, I happened to talk with a woman from England. She is a big fan of rugby, loves beer, has five grandchildren, and is travelling in Japan and China for 6 weeks by herself. We met again the next day for karaoke. She will fly on to Osaka and stay at Koya-san with some Buddhist monks for 3 days. The place doesn’t have alcohol, and that concerned her the most. (by a reader)
