I attended my university reunion for the first time in 50 years. Fortunately, most people recognized me, but I didn’t recognize some of them. One woman had become thin because of an illness. Another woman couldn’t walk without a cane due to a back problem. Another woman who used to be a quiet girl had become talkative. One man had lost his hair. Another man was fat. Someone who used to be interested in nothing but his studies was much more likable. After leaving the university, some had a happy life, and some had a hard time. I think that people’s faces can tell us a lot about their lives. (by a Jaremaga reader)

2019年9月25日「モバイル英語学習」第629号(英語のエッセイ): Google Translation Is Getting Better

Notes
Cambodia カンボジア;

———————
Google is getting better at translating English into Japanese. I was using the Chrome browser the other day, and I translated one of my stories by mistake. I read the Japanese translation and realized that it was very good. It was easy to understand and written in natural Japanese. Apparently this isn’t true with every language. One teacher told me that when he went to Cambodia, Google didn’t do a good job of translating Khmer (the language of Cambodia). Google gets a lot of feedback and data from people translating between English and Japanese but probably not so much from Khmer speakers. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
